From lowering stress levels to improving exam results and enhancing visual communication between teachers and students, the benefits of LED lighting extend much further than saving on energy bills.
The Edge Hill University campus, based at Ormskirk in Lancashire, was first opened in 1885 and has undergone numerous expansions and renovations over the last 135 years. The academic site has won awards for its landscaped grounds and state-of-the-art learning spaces and was recently voted top in the North West for university facilities.
The university has been recognised for their environmental initiatives and was given a Green Flag Award for the 9th year running at the end of 2020.
A new project was identified by the university, seeking to transform their existing Learning Resources Centre into modern teaching spaces for the Law & Psychology Departments. The aim of the project was to retain the original structure whilst opening up the internal areas, with an emphasis on light and space.
The building was to house a new lecture theatre, language labs, specialist psychology labs plus a range of study areas. With such a variety of teaching spaces being incorporated into the building, it was vital to install high performance lighting with sufficient flexibility, whilst ensuring their budget and energy saving goals were met.
Hilclare have worked on several Edge Hill projects in the past and were delighted to provide a solution that met the needs of their latest renovation. Using CAD drawings of the building, the Hilclare specialists were able to efficiently scope the requirements and provide a lighting design that involved downlights for the reception areas and corridors, suspended linear luminaires and suspended continuous fittings.
To offer the best learning environment, areas like the lecture theatre were assessed to identify optimum placement, light temperature and cylindrical luminance of the fittings. It was also important to incorporate DALI dimming capability and sensor technology that allowed daylight harvesting in order to save on energy consumption when sufficient natural light was available.
Edge Hill were impressed with Hilclare’s customer service and process management, energy efficient products and cost effective solution. The products put forward are all manufactured at Hilclare’s site in the UK located close to Edge Hill university campus. The LED fittings also come with a 5 year warranty, including 3 year on-site, ensuring minimal maintenance costs and future disruption to learning.
Elizabeth Poole from the project contractor L&B Electrical commented:
“Over the years of working on Edge Hill University I have used Hilclare lighting on most projects including their new medical school building as their product and service has
always been to the standard that Edge Hill expects and deserves.
Working closely with Tom we have delivered projects on time and Edge Hill have always been impressed with the service from L&B Electrical and Hilclare lighting.”
Tom Williams, Lighting Project Manager at Hilclare added:
“We are delighted with the success of our long-standing relationship with L&B Electrical and Edge Hill University. As their campus grows we look forward to continue working with them on exciting new projects using the latest Hilclare lighting technology to offer the best learning experience for their students.
Archie MacPherson, Group Managing Director of Pilot Group, said:
“This project is an opportunity for our Hilclare LED lighting division to work with Edge Hill University on applying our smart, safe and sustainable solutions to benefit their staff and students. As a UK provider of innovative products and services we are pleased to be working with this academic institution located here in the North West.”
Following the success of the Learning Resources Centre, Hilclare have also worked with Edge Hill University on lighting The Hub and Bio Science Department building, as well as lighting within their student accommodation.
